PRODUCT DESIGN LEADERSHIP, DIGITAL INNOVATION, STRATEGIC IMPLEMENTATION

The goal of this initiative at Discover was to transform the digital product development process to better meet customer expectations and deliver best-in-class user experiences in a highly competitive financial services landscape. With legacy teams operating in a slow, waterfall-style model—averaging only four releases per year—there was a growing disconnect between business priorities, customer needs, and digital delivery.

At the heart of this transformation was a reimagining of how UX and Product Design could lead within an agile framework. The Mobile team was restructured into lean, feature-based squads, with UX and product design deeply embedded in each team from discovery through delivery. This shift empowered designers to champion user needs earlier and more often, informing not just the how, but the why behind each feature.

By integrating continuous research, rapid prototyping, and iterative design into the new agile workflows, the teams saw a 300% increase in speed to market and a significant uplift in both customer satisfaction and design quality. More than just accelerating releases, this transformation enabled richer, more responsive product experiences—grounded in human-centered design and aligned with evolving user behavior and market demands.

The Award-Winning Redesign of Discover’s Mobile Platform

I led the end-to-end reimagining and relaunch of Discover’s award-winning mobile experience, driving a platform-wide transformation that prioritized user needs, cross-platform consistency, and future-ready innovation. Rooted in human-centered design, the initiative introduced a modernized UI, streamlined user flows, and elevated personalization across devices and form factors.

A centerpiece of the redesign was the launch of the Discover Virtual Assistant (DVA)—an intelligent, conversational interface designed to deliver real-time account information and support. DVA not only enhanced the in-app experience by reducing friction and improving responsiveness, but also drove measurable cost savings by reducing call center volume.

The new experience was also extended to support the latest in wearable tech, ensuring accessibility, seamless functionality, and on-the-go usability. This relaunch didn’t just modernize Discover’s mobile offering—it established a scalable design foundation that continues to evolve alongside user behavior and emerging technology.

pioneering first-to-market features through ux-driven innovation

To deliver a suite of first-to-market mobile banking features, I led cross-functional teams through a highly strategic and collaborative process—placing product design and user experience at the core of innovation. Our goal was to push the boundaries of what was possible in digital banking while enhancing usability, accessibility, and brand differentiation.

1. Opportunity Framing & UX Research
We began by identifying customer pain points and unmet needs through deep research and behavioral insight. I facilitated alignment across UX, product, and engineering to prioritize breakthrough features such as Touch ID for biometric authentication, Apple Pay in-app provisioning for seamless card enrollment, and Siri payment integration for voice-activated interactions—all aimed at reducing friction and elevating the everyday banking experience.

2. Collaborative Design & Prototyping
Guided by human-centered design principles, I oversaw iterative design and prototyping cycles to ensure the solutions were intuitive, scalable, and aligned with the broader mobile ecosystem. Design, research, and engineering worked in tight collaboration, stress-testing concepts with users and refining flows to meet real-world use cases with elegance and precision.

3. Agile Development & Technical Integration
Operating within agile workflows, I ensured tight feedback loops and rapid iteration, helping teams navigate technical constraints while maintaining design intent. My leadership helped bridge the gap between vision and execution, resulting in high-performance features that were deeply integrated, stable, and scalable.

4. Security & Regulatory Alignment
Given the high-stakes environment of financial services, I partnered closely with compliance, legal, and security teams to balance user experience with enterprise-grade safeguards. This was especially critical in launching features like Touch ID and Apple Pay provisioning, where secure authentication and data integrity were non-negotiable.

5. Launch & Continuous Optimization
I led the rollout and post-launch strategy, embedding a continuous improvement model based on live user data and performance analytics. This allowed us to refine and evolve each feature in real time, ultimately securing Discover’s position as a leader in mobile banking innovation—delivering not just utility, but meaningful, forward-thinking user experiences.

impact & results: design-led transformation at scale

This strategic overhaul of Discover’s mobile experience delivered measurable, high-impact results—transforming both the pace of delivery and the quality of the user experience. By embedding UX and product design leadership into the core of agile team structures, we achieved a 300% year-over-year increase in release frequency, dramatically accelerating the organization's ability to respond to customer needs and market shifts.

The app’s rating skyrocketed from 1.5 stars to consistently maintaining a 5-star rating in the App Store.

innovation & first-to-market

Under my leadership, Discover became a digital banking innovation leader—delivering first-to-market features that set new industry standards and elevated the brand’s reputation for customer-centric design:

  • First bank to introduce Touch ID authentication in a mobile app

  • First credit card issuer to enable in-app provisioning to Apple Pay

  • First financial institution to launch “Make a Payment” using Siri voice commands

These innovations not only enhanced accessibility and ease of use—they redefined what customers could expect from a modern financial app experience.

Discover’s design-driven transformation also earned industry recognition, including multiple J.D. Power awards, such as Highest Ranking Mobile App in Customer Satisfaction—surpassing long-established competitors like Chase and American Express.
